Internal insulation systems for all purposes

Efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective

When external insulation is not possible on a facade, the spotlight falls on internal insulation. Regardless of the time of year and weather, this solution can be used to incorporate energy efficiency measures into rooms. Sto’s three internal insulation system versions are each suitable for different requirements.

Many old buildings give our towns and cities their distinctive face. It is our obligation to preserve these buildings for future generations. But to do this, they need to be economically viable. A key part of this is ensuring that the buildings are fit for the future in terms of their energy usage. In the past, this was frequently a seemingly insurmountable task, as facade insulation was out of the question and internal insulation was viewed critically. Today, this dilemma has been overcome thanks to diffusion-open insulation systems and scientifically improved evaluation options. Internal insulation can now be implemented in most cases without any problems.

Extremely slim

Super-slim insulation systems based on highly insulating aerogels used to be used mainly in aircraft construction. But this high-tech material made from silicon dioxide can also be used in construction and building refurbishment. This enables the StoTherm In Aevero internal insulation system to save on heating costs and ensure comfort in buildings without taking up a lot of space. This is possible thanks to the Sto-Aevero Internal Insulation Board, which has a thermal conductivity rated value of just 0.017 W/mK. The boards can be cut to size using a utility knife or a handsaw. StoTherm In Aevero is diffusion-open and does not require a vapour barrier. The qualities of this high-tech system were demonstrated over the course of intensive testing at the Materials Testing Institute for the Construction Industry in Brunswick, whose final report attested to the system’s “perfect functioning in terms of building physics”. As early as 2013, the Federal Working Committee for the Renewal of Old Buildings (BAKA) recognised the internal insulation system for its “highly innovative character, particularly for use in the refurbishment of old buildings”.

Completely natural

StoTherm In Comfort provides top insulation properties for virtually all applications – with excellent environmental compatibility and no risk to health. This is demonstrated by the natureplus seal which was awarded to the non-combustible system. The entire system – from the adhesive to the finish – is tailored to its centrepiece: a perlite insulation board with thermal conductivity of 0.045 W/mK. This is a purely mineral component which is based on obsidian, a volcanic glass stone. Its properties in terms of building physics create an internal insulation system which is diffusion-open and capillary-active and does not require a vapour barrier – even in timbered buildings.

Highly cost-effective

StoTherm In SiMo combines effective insulation with outstanding value for money. The system, which is based on a highly insulating EPS board (0.032 W/mK) ensures both efficiency and cost-effectiveness. It is easy and safe to apply and can be used in all kinds of situations, as demonstrated over the course of intensive testing by the Institute for Building Climatology at Dresden University of Technology. The system blocks diffusion without using a vapour barrier.

Freedom to combine

No two construction tasks are the same, which is why Sto has developed different internal insulation systems with different focuses. The systems can also be combined with one another to create even more versions. If, for example, you have opted for the ecological benefits of StoTherm In Comfort, you can still use the space-saving StoTherm In Aevero in narrow window reveals. The application process is virtually identical for the different systems and the system components are also very similar. It is only when it comes to the bonding and reinforcing mortar that you need to match your choice to the system in question. The different system combinations can all be coated in the same way with products from the Sto interior range.

 


 

A popular combination is the StoTherm In Comfort and StoTherm In Aevero internal insulation systems, with the latter used in the window reveals. To ensure airtightness, the diffusion-open adhesive tape “StoSeal Band BK” with nonwoven fabric facing on the rear is attached first.

The Sto-Aevero Internal Insulation Board is fixed on the wall with the mineral bonding and reinforcing mortar “StoLevell In Aevero”. The adhesive layer thickness depends on the insulant thickness.
